The short version

"0 commission" is a pricing structure, not a cost promise. Your total landed cost has three components: the service fee (order commission), the FX spread (the gap between the settlement rate and the market mid-rate), and the freight uplift (how far the quoted shipping price sits above cost). Any one of them can carry the profit - zeroing the commission just moves it to a spot you watch less closely. This page gives you a five-minute verification anyone can run, plus a worked example pulled live on 2026-10-11.

This is a methodology piece: competitors are described neutrally and no platform's service quality is judged here; every figure should be answered by live quotes and your own invoices.

The three components of landed cost

Fee positionCommon formHow to verify
Service feeA percentage of merchandise value (0-10% typical) or a flat per-order feeIs the rate and its minimum published on the fees page?
FX spreadA settlement rate set below the market mid-rate; the gap is the hidden feeMultiply the goods price by the day's published mid-rate and compare with what the platform charges you
Freight upliftHigher per-kg rates, heavier first-weight bases, smaller volumetric divisorsQuote the same parcel on 2-3 platforms and compare unit price and first-weight base

The three do not have to coexist - platforms put profit in different positions, which is exactly why comparing a single component misleads.

The FX spread: the quietest of the three

Goods settle in CNY while you pay in USD or EUR - a conversion happens every time. The transparent approach is to publish the FX basis (e.g. "mid-market +X%, itemised at checkout"); the opaque approach is to simply hand you a house rate. The latter charges no "fee" - it collects on every order inside the rate.

One measured sample from our archive: in the 2026-10-08 same-window snapshot, the USD settlement rates across one leading agent's US lines clustered at 6.69-6.71 (recorded per channel in our snapshot, source and date noted). You don't have to take anyone's word - multiply by the day's published mid-rate yourself and the gap shows up on its own.

The September-October 2026 rate window

Community discussions and our snapshot point the same way: in Sep-Oct 2026, multiple agents raised US-line freight. In our 2026-10-08 same-window snapshot, that leading agent's 12 available US-line 1 kg general-goods channels ranged ¥156-459 (median ¥254) - a near-threefold spread between channels of the same platform and corridor, driven mainly by line type and billing bases (first-weight terms, volumetric divisors). This paragraph states only the corridor measured in our own snapshot and makes no claim about any platform's price-change magnitude; current prices are each platform's own.

The four-step comparison method

  1. Same-box quotes — Pick one real product link (with its price) and quote it on 2-3 agents: same destination, same weight, same goods type. Screenshot everything - rates move weekly, and memory-based comparison always loses.
  2. Check the FX basis — Write down each platform's settlement rate and compare it with the day's published mid-rate. A gap above 1% deserves a question: how much money does that spread take from your total?
  3. Read first-weight and additional-weight bases — A "¥10 first weight" means nothing without its base: billing from 0.1 kg vs 1 kg are different systems, and 0.5 kg-based lines bill tiny parcels at a full 0.5 kg. The volumetric divisor (6,000 vs 8,000) moves bulky-light freight by 30% or more.
  4. Separate "tax-included" from "tax prepaid" — "Duty included, guaranteed" and "duty prepaid, refund the difference" are different promises. Under prepaid schemes, differences can hit either end - check whether the platform publishes a compensation standard and a decision deadline.

How BUYCN prices the same things (rendered live)

Measuring ourselves with the same ruler - the following is rendered from site settings in real time, with nothing hard-coded on this page:

① Service fee: waived - zeroed since 2026-10-01, i.e. genuinely zero commission. ② Settlement FX: mid-market with no markup - zeroed since 2026-10-01, the FX position no longer carries profit. ③ Freight: billed per gram from 0.05 kg, unit price and registration fee quoted live and itemised on the estimator; free storage 90 days, then 0.1 CNY/day. If rates change, the transparency report and checkout are the live sources of truth.

Worked example (2026-10-11): a US-bound general-goods parcel, 2 kg, merchandise value ¥500. Our live estimates API returned "US commercial parcel - general goods" as the lowest-freight channel: international freight ¥231 (8-16 days), service fee ¥0 (rate is 0), landed total from ¥731 including a duty estimate - every figure pulled from that day's production estimates endpoint, none hand-calculated. Your own parcel belongs to the estimator's live quote; duty belongs to customs actuals.

Run it yourself: open the shipping estimator, pick destination and weight, or read the published figures in the transparency report and evidence center. The full cost structure starting from 1688 is in our 1688 total-cost guide; the US low-value duty-line changes are in the de minimis timeline.

Pitfalls

  • Comparing commission only - the FX and freight positions alone can turn "0 commission" into "more expensive";
  • Comparing from last month's screenshots - rates move weekly and every platform reprices periodically;
  • Reading "¥10 first weight" as cheap - a first weight without its base is meaningless; compare 0.1 kg / 0.5 kg / 1 kg bases;
  • Ignoring volumetric weight - bulky-light goods (plush, ita bags, foam) are billed by divisor, and 6,000 vs 8,000 can move freight 30%+;
  • Confusing "duty prepaid" with "duty included" - prepaid-refund-the-difference and guaranteed-inclusive are different promises, and you pay the gap when things go wrong.

FAQ

How do "0 commission" agents make money?
From the other two components: a settlement rate set below the market mid-rate, uplifted freight quotes, plus add-ons like overtime storage and paid extra photos. Commission is just the most visible slot - judge cost by the total landed price.
How do I check which FX rate I was charged?
Take the converted goods price on your checkout and divide it by the goods' CNY list price - that is the rate the platform actually used. Compare it with the day's published mid-rate; the gap is the FX spread. Two minutes, end to end.
Why do agents quote such different freight?
Three variables: line type (air/sea/special line), billing bases (first-weight terms and volumetric divisors), and the uplift itself. In our 2026-10-08 snapshot, one platform's US 1 kg general-goods channels spread nearly threefold - align "same weight, same goods type, same corridor" before comparing, or you are comparing noise.
What is the difference between "duty included" and "duty prepaid"?
The former is a fixed promise (duty is inside the quote); the latter pre-collects an estimate and refunds or bills the difference against the actual tax bill - differences can hit either end. Check whether the platform publishes a compensation standard, refund timeline and decision deadline.
How do I verify BUYCN's fees?
The service-fee rate and FX basis are published in the transparency report and itemised at checkout; freight is quoted live by destination and weight on the estimator; and the three figures in this page's self-assessment are rendered from site settings in real time, not hard-coded into the article.
Fee basis: freight figures are published on-site reference baselines (selling-rate basis) - live estimator quotes and outbound actuals prevail; import duties/taxes are determined by your customs authority. BUYCN does not provide duty-paid (tax-inclusive) shipping.
